What can be done at the school level to help the Earth?
Here are the basics:
- Plant trees
- Don’t use as much paper – consider using scrap
- Reuse paper( Double-sided copies)
- Integrate environment friendly programs into curriculum and clubs
- Recycling
- Recycle bins in effect throughout the school
- Use the bins in the cafeteria for plastics
- Use recycled paper products wherever possible
- Eliminate Styrofoam use
Clubs & Curriculum
- Environmental Awareness Club
- Raise awareness among students that are not involved
- Active school participation
- Projects to plant trees
- Mercy Outreach
- Mercy Outreach is planning on doing 2 major projects that incorporate
our Stewardship of the Earth theme
- Mathematics
- Integrate ideas of global warming into logic questions on tests or
homework
- Statistics- use questions on the environment and awareness for projects,
problems, etc.
- Science
- Health- address how environmental and external factors affect individual
and community health
- Biology- address global development, environmental issues, understanding
ecosystem, and how human actions are altering the physical environment
- Social Sciences
- Government – What does it do to address global warming? How does it
affect political candidates? What is the government’s role in dealing
with global warming?
- World History - need for community stability and peace in an
interdependent world
- Economics - understand changes that occur in meaning, use, distribution,
and importance of resources
- English
- Information in research and citing
- Reading material to understand and interpret
- Essays on this controversial issue
- Religion
- Offer service that reflects the stewardship of the earth
- Moral issues related to responsibility for Earth’s sustainability
- Spirituality of stewardship of Earth’s resources
- Creation and caretaking in Scripture
- Liturgical theology and practice: use of the symbols of Earth –
sacraments
What has been integrated into Mercy so far…
- Recycling bins throughout the entire school, where as last year there were
few if any
- Teachers using less paper or double sided copies
- Curriculum integration
